At an early age\, he began to create his own music which evolved into a relentless passion and respect for the drum instrument. At fourteen\, he found himself in the hallways of the renowned Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas\, Texas in 2009. DESCRIPTION:Fall celebrates the release of “Fall” collection of improvised music and original compositions which explore the themes of being transgender\n\n\nFall Raye (they/them) is a trans/non-binary saxophonist\, improviser\, and composer living in Boston MA. Their work revolves around the trans experience in the US\, interpersonal relationships\, and opposing oppressive global systems. Fall grew up in Las Vegas\, NV\, and began studying music at 12 years old\, playing woodwinds\, piano\, and drums. They began playing professionally in the area at 16\, eventually leaving to study at the Eastman School of Music from 2018-2019\, transferred to Berklee College of Music and graduated in 2023. Fall has appeared on multiple albums\, including Naomi Nakanishi’s ‘Hear Me Speak’ and Raul Molina’s ‘Matria.’ Fall has had the mentorship of many incredible musicians\, including Terri Lyne Carrington\, Kris Davis\, Godwin Louis\, Tony Malaby\, Leo Genovese\, Walter Smith III\, and Miguel Zenon. Fallhas also performed concerts with Miguel Zenon and Elena Pinderhuges\, as well as spent a month in Italy performing concerts for the Sounds of Freedom music residency. Fall’s self-titled debut album will be released January 18th on Boomslang Records. \nIn Fall’s artistic vision is to create work that speaks from their own experiences as a trans person\, as a person healing from their own traumas\, and through their interpersonal relationships\, to create a listening experience where the audience can feel less alone\, seen\, and in community with others. Through vulnerability through creative and improvised music\, Fall aims to create a unique musical experience every time they play\, to explore new avenues in music and to reflect the improvisatory nature of living on Earth. Many wonderful poets have graced our stage and become members of our “Lizard Family.” One of those poets\, Omoizele “Oz” Okoawo\, died suddenly in October. He\, along with his sister\, Iyeoka\, were important early performers at Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam. He read publicly for the first time at the Lizard Lounge in the first weeks of our tenure and was a fixture for many years following. He coached the Lizard Lounge National Poetry Slam team from the slam’s inaugural year in 2001 until 2007\, competing as a team member for five of those seven years. Though we hadn’t seen much of him in the past few years\, he remained an enduring and legendary figure in the Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam story. \nTonight\, as we commemorate 27 years of spoken word and music at Lizard Lounge\, we will also celebrate Oz’s life and writing with family\, friends\, and many of the poets he worked with\, inspired\, coached\, and loved.
