SUMMARY:SESSION AMERICANA with Eleanor Buckland Residency Night 1
DESCRIPTION:Event is 21+ \nGA $25/$30 at the door \nReserved Tables $60 \nDoors at 7 \nSESSION AMERICANA is thrilled to return to the venue that saw the group gel into what has become a 20 year journey of accessing the joy. For years the band held down a weekly Lizard residency that not only formed the core of the band’s support but also witnessed the birth of many new songs and introduced a wide variety of musical guests to an unsuspecting crowd each week. SESSION AMERICANA with Eleanor Buckland will once again call The Lizard Lounge home for four consecutive nights this November 19-22 \nFor the uninitiated SESSION AMERICANA is a cast of top-shelf players\, singers\, and writers who tour internationally\, taking their own songs\, plus hundreds more from the American songbook\, on the road. Whether you catch Session Americana in a rock hall or on a festival stage\, you’ll be a part of the intimate\, raucous scene these players built years ago at Toad\, the neighborhood bar where it all began in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. Looking back\, the group has had a natural\, almost inevitable evolution from a loose bunch of friends sitting around swapping songs in a bar\, to a hot-ticket weekly residency\, to a touring collective. Along the way\, the band has made nine records (so far)\, played clubs and festivals across the U.S. and Europe\, and developed deep collaborative bonds with a wide community of musicians. Session Americana’s diligent avoidance of music business “shoulds” has led the band down a quirky and joyful path through the music world. The result is evident in the musical prowess the players and singers bring to every show. Swapping instruments\, trading off lead vocals and sharing songwriting credits\, Session Americana is constantly exploring new collaborations and touring like a band out of time\, always searching for a welcoming and homey venue\, a long lunch with old friends\, and a good glass of wine. \nhttps://www.sessionamericana.com/

SUMMARY:Four Piece Suit/Fran McConville Trio
DESCRIPTION:We’ve got the perfect spot for you to kick off your holiday weekend\, Four Piece Suit and the Fran McConville Trio live Nov 27th!\n\n\nEvent is 21+ \n$12/$15 door \nDoors at 7 \nFour Piece Suit is “a highball of sea-foam-soaked guitar and squalling tenor sax\, shaken—not stirred—with surf tangos\, Battista-era mambos\, beach blanket boppers\, spy music\, crime jazz\, and movie themes.” The predominantly instrumental group brings humor\, romance and a pulsing rhythm to the category-defying range musical styles they reinvent. Heard on soundtracks for Sex and the City and Dexter\, Four Piece Suit puts on a sizzling live show. \nThe band is: Milt Reder on guitar\, John Aruda on sax\, Dean Cassell on bass and Seth Pappas on drums. For more on 4PS\, please visit www.fourpiecesuit.com. Truly beyond category\, their eclectic instrumental\, sometimes jazz\, sometimes rock style\, brings forth a unique blend of long forgotten musical influences and often suggests a certain film noir feeling. \nThe sexy\, sophisticated\, yet tongue-in-cheek music of FOUR PIECE SUIT is frequently featured on the highly acclaimed HBO series Sex and the City\, Telemundo\, NBC’s Ed\, Dexter on CBS\, and cable shows such as Keeping Up with the Kardashians\, America’s Top Model\, Run’s House\, and many others. Film work includes Our Lips are Sealed (Olsen Twins)\, In the Weeds (Molly Ringwald)\, Stag (HBO films)\, Psycho Beach Party\, Along Came Polly (Jennifer Aniston)\, and others. \nThe band has also been heard in many independent films\, including Sundance Festival Winner Blue Vinyl. They have also done a full score for an HBO claymation film\, Real Men Wear Hawaiian Shirts\, an award winner at the San Francisco Film Festival. \nLike many of the greatest bands\, only at a live show can one really “get” what FOUR PIECE SUIT is all about… \nhttps://fourpiecesuitband.com \n\n\nThe Fran McConville Trio plays an eclectic\, cosmic blend of instrumental rock\, groove & reggae music. We like to get weird and play in odd time signatures\, go to outer space\, and come back again. Members of the FMT have played with Lions At The Gate\, Lady Lupine\, Ethan Rossiter Band\, Sonya Rae Taylor\, and others! \n \nSome artists that have had a big influence are The Beatles\, Miles Davis\, Jimi Hendrix\, John Scofield\, Jeff Beck\, Jerry Garcia\, Bela Fleck\, & MMW.

SUMMARY:Flying Vipers/Trio Kobeta Ya Makasi
DESCRIPTION:Flying Vipers celebrate their debut 7″ release for Easy Star records with Trio Kobeta Ya Makasi November 29th at the Lizard Lounge!\n\n\nEvent is 21+ \n$15/$20 Door \nDoors at 8 \n \nFlying Vipers emerged from a basement lair outside Boston Mass in 2015\, releasing a couple cassette EPs worth of raw yet highly melodic dub (The Green Tape and The Copper Tape). Entirely produced on an antiquated 4-track cassette recorder and mixed live by Jay Champnay of 10 Ft. Ganja Plant\, this amateur equipment is wielded by seasoned pros as their songs mutate with a keen sense of classic JA sounds and post-punk experimentation. \nTypically a 7-piece unit live\, the core quartet of twin brothers Marc & John Beaudette on drum & bass (Destroy Babylon\, The Macrotones)\, Zack Brines on keys (Pressure Cooker\, Kings of Nuthin’)\, and Kellee Webb on vocals (Destroy Babylon) have 20+ years in the New England scene\, sharing the stage with legendary reggae acts from around the world\, including Burning Spear\, Lee “Scratch” Perry\, the Skatalites\, and Hollie Cook\, among many others. \nThis November\, the Vipers will be celebrating the release of their new 7″ single\, “Show Me”\, their debut for Easy Star Records. \nhttps://flyingvipers.com/ \n \nKobeta ya Makasi (Lingala: “hitting it hard!”) is the new trio led by Nathaniel Braddock (Occidental Brothers\, Air Congo\, Accra Quartet) with King Eric and Kilo Bass: two Congolese musicians raised in Kampala\, Uganda. The group are sebenologues\, pushing the edges of contemporary ndombolo and soukous into new worlds of dub\, shoegaze\, surf\, and Central African “bofenya rock.” The sound is now.

SUMMARY:Soggy Po Boys-"Leave the Light On" Album Release with Itay Dayan
DESCRIPTION:The Soggy Po Boys return to the Lizard Lounge to celebrate their latest release “Leave the Light On”! November 30th with Itay Dayan!\n\n\nEvent is 21+$15/$20 door \nDoors at 8 \nThis fall\, New Orleans jazz exponents The Soggy Po Boys will celebrate the release of their 6th full-length album\, Leave the Light On\, in a series of not-to-be-missed release shows around the Northeast. \nThe Po Boys formed in 2012 to shake the walls of a local club on a Fat Tuesday but have honed their sound and become more than a Mardi Gras centerpiece. Exploring the vast musical traditions of New Orleans and expanding their repertoire to look beyond NOLA jazz\, the band performs traditional Caribbean tunes (it’s been said that New Orleans is the northernmost city in the Caribbean)\, as well as Meters funk\, soul\, and brass band / street beat music. \nThe latest record captures the 7-piece band’s mission of embracing tradition without becoming a museum piece. By blending traditional and original songs\, the album embraces themes of joy\, frustration\, loneliness\, love\, and sadness\, and explores these feelings with the group’s trademark humorous sincerity. \nLeave the Light On was recorded at Acadia Recording Company in Portland\, Maine where it was tracked by Jason Phelps. Phelps helped to sculpt the sounds and provided a perfect environment to capture the essence of what the band loves most: playing live. The result is music that is very much grounded in the sonic liminal space that the Po Boys occupy best–happy-ish\, live-ish\, new-ish\, and bull-ish. \n“These guys have done their homework\, worked it out on the bandstand and put in the hours in the studio. It all adds up to a party you can bring with you when you want to treat your friends to a real good time.” -Ben Schenck of New Orleans’ Panorama Jazz Band \n“There’s no retro to their sound\, no putting on airs\, this is living music respectful of the source\, played by consummate professionals.” -Syncopated Times \nhttps://www.soggypoboys.com/ \n\n\nCurrently based in Boston\, Massachusetts\, Israeli clarinetist and composer Itay Dayan is considered one of today’s most promising klezmer musicians. His recent album\, “Hoffman’s Farewell”\, demonstrates Itay’s proficiency within the traditional klezmer idiom and his pursuit in looking for new sounds and options for his music. Drawing inspiration from different musical worlds\, Itay played with various ensembles such as the Klezmer Conservatory Band\, Meitar Ensemble and the Israel Klezmer Orchestra\, with which he has toured internationally. While studying for his M.Mus at New England Conservatory and his B.Mus at the Jerusalem Academy of Music\, Itay won scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation\, Ronen Foundation\, Ima Foundation\, and the Zvi and Ofra Meitar Family Foundation. Notably\, Itay is a recipient of the Siday Fellowship for Musical Creativity by the Jerusalem Institute of Contemporary Music\, and of the Peter Row Global Musician Award.

SUMMARY:Billy Wylder/Emily Haviland
DESCRIPTION:Event is 21+\n$20/$25 door GA \n$50 reserved tables \nDoors at 7 \nFrom the front-lines at Standing Rock to the archaic streets of Jerusalem\, the Sahel Desert to Carnegie Hall\, music has been the source of strength for Billy Wylder. The band features Avi Salloway (Bombino/Hey Mama) joined by an inspired cast of singular artists who have performed across five continents including concerts at Coachella\, Newport Folk Festival\, New Orleans Jazz Fest\, Montreal Jazz Fest\, Carnegie Hall\, and Lincoln Center. \nBilly Wylder released their seminal third album\, Trying to Get Free (Sand & Gold Records)\, on August 25\, 2023. The music weaves together American folk and rock with sensibilities from the Sahara Desert\, exploring new musical space akin to Devendra Banhart\, Beck\, and Tinariwen. Billy Wylder’s new recordings evoke musical evolutions built on grooves informed by ancient African rhythms\, art-rock textures\, expansive guitars\, violins\, synths\, and drum machines. Salloway’s lyrics flow with inspiration from mythical songwriting hero Leonard Cohen\, while threading together more abstract imagery reminiscent of Thom Yorke. \nOn the new record\, Billy Wylder grapples with some of the most critical questions of our time. What is freedom? Has the American dream died? What is truth and what is truly important to us? The band knows that it takes courage to follow your dreams\, to create your own sense of purpose and meaning while living in a society where the media and politics relentlessly project fear\, hatred\, division\, and consumerism. Billy Wylder’s live shows are known for bringing together diverse audiences and building community through uplifting performances\, movement\, and a sense of universal goodwill. The global band includes musicians from Vermont\, Cuba\, Peru\, and Chicago. \nBilly Wylder has toured extensively\, performing and collaborating with renowned artists including Jack Johnson\, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band\, Bombino\, The Low Anthem\, and Pete Seeger. \n“A sense of mystery and majesty.” –No Depression \n“Songs that sound impossibly up-to-minute while remaining steeped in tradition.” –PopMatters \nTouring band: \nAvi Salloway (vocals\, guitar)\, Rob Flax (violin\, synth\, vocals)\, Jennifer Giammanco (bass\, vocals)\, Ricardo Guerra (drums\, vocals) \nbillywlder.com \n\n\n\n\nAs a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a double major in fiddle performance and music therapy\, Emily Haviland studied everything from American Roots and its rocky history to how music can alter brain chemistry. Throughout her career\, Emily has shared the stage with some of the greats\, like Darol Anger\, the late Emy Phelps\, Bruce Molsky\, Aoife O’Donovan\, Margot Price\, Abigail Lapell\, Twisted Pine and Cold Chocolate\, and has been showcased on records released by Alisa Amador and Kaiti Jones\, among others. Emily released her debut solo album\, “Not Who You Think”\, in February 2024\, showcasing her vast musical repertoire—modern folk music with roots in jazz and americana. World-renowned fiddler Darol Anger aptly describes her as the “Realest Deal in a long time\,” praising her genuine voice\, profound reflections\, and songs that boldly articulate the unspoken truths we all harbor. “Real voice\, real thoughts\, real songs that say – with pungent power – what everyone’s really thinking. Glad to welcome her work into the world.” \nhttps://www.facebook.com/emilyhavi/

SUMMARY:Poetry Jam-A Celebration of Douglas Bishop
DESCRIPTION:A celebration of the life of longtime Poetry Jam collaborator Douglas Bishop.\n\n\nIt is with a heavy heart that Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam announces the passing of our dear longtime collaborator\, Douglas Bishop\, who left us several weeks ago.. Douglas was originally scheduled to perform at his traditional “December birthday” feature\, and we will now dedicate that evening to honoring his memory and celebrating his poetry. He was a cherished presence\, and will be deeply missed by everyone in our community who had the privilege and pleasure of knowing him. \n“Douglas Bishop has been jamming and slamming at the Poetry Jam since it got going – which means he’s been a regular at the Lizard for more than 20 years. As a teacher\, he has worked with classrooms ranging from early childhood to university\, but now mostly teaches online for Mill City Speaks and Lowell Poetry Wheel. As a poet\, he has performed in venues from Glasgow to Guatemala\, but now primarily appears as one of the hosts of the Untitled Open Mic in Lowell. His doctoral study on the development of literate identity in young writers continues in his work for Freeverse!\, Lowell’s youth poetry group. He also works as a visual artist\, as well as performing vocals\, flute\, and percussion with his jazz-poetry band\, Dr. Dougie’s Dangerous Delight (4D). For more\, see douglasbishoppoet.com.This feature will involve a special collaboration between Douglas and Blake Newman to present a poem and song cycle\, “Requiem for the Trees\,” which will include live video recording and special guest musicians along with the Trio.”

SUMMARY:Skunk Jesus/CLAMB
DESCRIPTION:Skunk Jesus and CLAMB return to the Lizard Lounge Dec 18th!\n\n\nEvent is 21+ \n$15/$20 door \nDoors at 7 \n\n\nSkunk Jesus \nExperience the sounds of Skunk Jesus\, a band that emerged from the creative minds of Riley Stockwell and Mike Dettorre in 2015. Together with a rotating cast of top musicians from New England\, they create an improvisational art form that delves into the unknown\, transforming initial ideas into fully formed pieces of music on the spot. Drawing inspiration from free jazz\, psychedelia\, and experimental grooves\, Skunk Jesus offers a dark and whimsical journey into uncharted musical territories. \nhttps://m.facebook.com/skunkjesus/ \n\n\nCLAMB was born out of a Dadaist desire to create music free from societal norms of perfection. They dig deep into the groove of soulful American music from the infinite James Brown and Alice Coltrane to the aether of seventies European krautrock pioneers like Cluster and Harmonia to patiently sketch foreign landscapes from the ground up. Clamb are devoted to keeping an attitude of acceptance in their largely-improvised songs\, choosing a direction and exploring its corners and nuances to tell stories without words. \n \nClamb’s tonal palette features Peter Danilchuk’s synths blissfully wiggling through the air\, Jameson Stewart’s mythical gold-glitter-encrusted fretless bass sending terrestrial energy rippling through a rogue’s gallery of cheap pedals\, Joshua Merhar’s playful drumming that constantly eggs the band onward to new hemispheres of groove\, and in 2022 Clamb introduced guitar hero and best friend Sam Crawford whose tonal character and improvisational voice have propelled the band’s ensemble playing further into the fever-dream-realm than ever expected. Clamb hopes they have cornered the market on the Venn diagram intersection of 60s psych nerds raised on Soft Machine Volume 2 and their kids who have spent the past decade gorging on Brainfeeder and Meshuggah. It is Clamb’s distinct wish that each performance function as a Polaroid of the exact moment of its creation\, never to be repeated quite the same way ever again\, remaining both pensive yet hard-grooving all the same.https://www.facebook.com/clambband?mibextid=LQQJ4d
