SUMMARY:Baker Thomas Band w/ Special Guests The 890's
DESCRIPTION:A longtime TOAD favorite\, the Baker Thomas Band live at the Lizard Lounge with The 890s!\n\n\nWhether it’s the infectious grooves\, hooks\, horns\, heartbreakers or anthemic rock finale’s\, Baker Thomas Band invokes a spectrum of high spirits and feeds the soul like a night out with good friends should. \n \nBeginning on stage at TOAD in Cambridge\, MA in 2009\, BTB is an eclectic collection of musicians and good friends getting together to make great music and have a blast! \n \n“After years of being a singer/songwriter/solo bassist\, the one thing I missed the most was the raw energy and power of a band. All my roots are from rock and roll…. being a soloist was a serious departure from that\,” Tom says. Baker Thomas Band or “BTB” was not intended to be as big as it is now. The original line up was drums\, bass\, guitar\, keyboard and trombone. From that humble 5 we’ve grown and now the band is rarely less than 9 or 10 artists with a full horn section and percussion section as well.” BTB has been a blast and hearing my songs interpreted through so many talented artists is a dream come true!” – Tom “The Baker” Bianchi \nBaker Thomas Band \n \n\n\nThe 890s are a funk rock band out of Somerville – originating during 2020\, the majority of the band lived in the same 2 apartment house – creating a basement rehearsal space during the lockdown. The band consists of 8 members and frequent guest performers – including but not limited to drums\, bass\, guitars\, keys\, saxophone and multiple vocalists. In April of 2024 The 890s released their first studio single\, ‘Waiting’ on Spotify and Apple Music.Check them out on IG and YouTube – @The890s

SUMMARY:Laney Jones & The Spirits/Canyon Lights
DESCRIPTION:Nashville’s Laney Jones and the Spirits with special guests Canyon Lights live at the Lizard Lounge September 11th!\n\n\nEvent is 21+$12/$15 door \nDoors at 7 \nLaney Jones and the Spirits have big f*cking heart. It’s undeniable watching Jones who usually performs live as a trio on her gnarly 1960s Sears Roebuck Silvertone guitar with her life and musical partner (Brian Dowd) holding the heartbeat on the drums. \n\nThey’re “everything that’s good about rock and roll” says GRAMMY-winning icon Lucinda Williams. \n\nAnd like Williams\, Jones’s road has been hard fought. Cutting their teeth on mics literally and metaphorically across the US for the past decade\, Jones’s free-wheeling\, do-it-yourself lifestyle is the stuff of modern folklore. With few prospects when the Florida-raised couple first moved to Nashville in 2017\, they made rent by stacking beers at the local Piggly Wiggly. A chameleon of a songwriter\, Jones has since found other ways to pay the bills\, licensing songs for pop projects to the likes of Guinness and Google\, but the music the couple creates cuts deeper than that. It’s personal. \nCatchy\, yet raw and arrestingly sincere\, it’s no wonder Jones’s cult following has been steadily growing since the release of their seminal record Stories Up High (2022) produced by Andrjia Tokic (Alabama Shakes\, Langhorne Slim) of the famed Bomb Shelter in East Nashville. Though the record wrestles with themes of depression and the meaning of life\, the vibes are more bittersweet than sad. Jones says “Stories Up High was me writing what I needed to hear. It taught me to let go. Let my ego die…it was deeply healing and freeing. It’s where I live now”. \nAs Laney Jones and the Spirits open for bands like The Heartless Bastards and Kurt Vile — a night where Jones sold so much merch that the theater owner out of pure amazement doubled their opening band slot pay — one thing is clear\, their live punk energy is something to witness. \nJones’s newest song\, “Stay At Home\,” released this February is an acid lick taste of where the band is heading. Sonically rich and lofi\, it hints of Doolittle-era Pixies without the stale\, microwaved mouthfeel of someone trying to reheat the 90s grunge scene. At the core\, as usual\, it’s their songwriting that begs more from the listener. Using hyperbole and the popular pandemic catch-phrase to question modern man’s true sense of reality and humanity. \nFrom a youth growing up with kangaroos in swampy central Florida to officially showcasing at this year’s SXSW\, Laney Jones is not someone you can put in a box. Nor should you try with their music. They’re something and someone wholly unique that you just gotta see for yourself. \nhttps://www.laney-jones.com/ \n\n\nCanyon Lights are a bona fide blend of throwback rock n’ roll\, swampy Americana\, and heavy blues. Pat Faherty propels his Hound Dog Taylor inspired slide playing into realms of psychedelia and southern rock. His voice soars and has never sounded so good. Carman’s monstrous drumming combines elements of Bonham\, Helm\, and Palmer. Buoyed by a newly discovered co-writing chemistry\, Faherty and Carman of Canyon Lights are set to take their new heavy sound to a city near you. \nhttps://www.canyonlightsband.com/

SUMMARY:EveryDejaVu Records Presents "Pieces" Vol. II
DESCRIPTION:Everydejavu Records Presents “Pieces” vol.II featuring Onbloom\,Borboleta\, Maliyah and KAYANA\n\n\nEvent is 21+ \n$12/$15 \nDoors at 7 \n \nKAYANA:Boston-based R&B artist KAYANA released her debut EP\, big tree little forest\, back in November 2023. Her sound is defined by ethereal\, escapist soundscapes that transcend genres\, aided by her soulful\, powerful vocals. She’s been featured on albums by Armand Hammer\, Koncept Jackson\, and Big Flowers. \nMaliyah:North Carolina-born and Boston-based Maliyah creates alternative R&B that feels like a spiritual awakening when you press play. Her 2024 EP FLORIDA WATER is a body of work that exemplifies her skill at bending genres\, as she joins the sounds of her punk and pop-influenced teenage years with instrumentation and melodies inspired by the sonic culture of Arabia. \nBorboleta:Borboleta\, from Providence\, Rhode Island\, is a singer who pairs pop sensibilities with ethereal R&B stylings. As well as Borboleta’s musical inspirations (ranging from Frank Ocean\, Kari Faux and Missy Elliot\, to classic rock and Black spiritual jazz from the 60s and 70s)\, the natural world is key to unlocking their sound. This blend of lighthearted pop melodies and crucial messaging is what makes their debut EP\, Until That Time\, so essential. They are working on the follow up to Until That Time now\, to be released by EveryDejaVu later this year. \nOnbloom: Onbloom\, a Boston based artist\, transcends her legacy through music. With genres like alternative r&b and electronic on her newest demo tape\, “swept under the rug\,” she continues to emphasize the power of vulnerability. She considers herself a vessel for all the yearners out there! Onbloom is set to drop a new single in September. \n \nEveryDejaVu started as a blog in 2012. It was a small passion project mainly as a way to have a platform to talk about our favorite music and artists. After building relationships with artists and being presented the chance to premiere music\, we began curating our own projects. The pre-label releases were a success in our eyes. We were able to bring together friends of the blog for free digital compilations and cassettes that we could sell to fans of us or the artists. \nhttps://everydejavu.com/

SUMMARY:Kimaya Diggs/Samantha Farrell
DESCRIPTION:Kimaya Diggs and Samantha Farrell share a night at the Lizard Lounge September 21st!\n\n\nEvent is 21+$20/$25 door \nDoors at 8 \nMusician Kimaya Diggs navigates her world with stories. Penning her first one-woman show as a little kid\, she’s published fiction\, earned a Callaloo fellowship for poetry\, and works days as a speechwriter—not to mention the accolades her songwriting’s earned\, including a New England Music Awards nod\, gigs at legendary folk haunts like Club Passim\, and appearances at Green River Festival\, Rubblebucket’s Dream Picnic\, and the Emily Dickinson festival. “I’ve always thought of my writing and music as one thing—connective storytelling\,” Diggs explains. But while her mother was sick with a twelve-year illness\, Diggs felt unable to share the whole truth. Her first LP\, 2018’s Breastfed\, was largely about her mom\, but it wasn’t until her passing that Diggs was free to use songwriting to process. “Sharing my grieving experience has resonated with people; they’re excited to hear something that’s not all good\,” notes Diggs. To help cope\, Diggs and her husband Jacob Rosazza—also her musical collaborator—rescued an ex-racing dog\, Quincy. Though they shared only two years together\, caring for the traumatized animal helped Diggs find purpose. “Having him was challenging\, but at the same time\, he’s why we survived the first year without my mom\,” offers Diggs. “It was special to get to love a creature so much—because of\, in spite of\, and in addition to the challenges he came with.” Losing Quincy gave her greater insight on heartache\, so she named her newest album after him. https://www.kimayadiggs.com/ \n\n\nSamantha Farrell is a Boston-based musician and vocalist whose sound is a gorgeously moody fusion of jazz\, alt R&B and pop. Once described as “the best singer-songwriter you’ve never heard of\,” by NBC Los Angeles\, Farrell has always been understated in her approach to her music career – but\, those who are in the know\, have been quietly dazzled with her unique voice\, rhythmic subtleties and tonal nuance for years. \nSamantha started her career in Los Angeles where she released her first album “Spiritus.” In 2008\, she caught the ear of LeRoi Moore\, the saxophonist of the Dave Matthews Band\, who was in the midst of producing and developing her next album in Charlottesville\, VA when he suddenly passed away\, and in October 2009\, “Luminous” was independently released. Through word of mouth alone\, the album charted No. 7 on the national pop iTunes charts. She has since followed that up with two EPs\, “In Between Stories” (2010) and “Softly Swooning World” (2013)\, with her latest album\, “September Sun” (2016) being voted as one of WUMB radio’s Top 10 albums of 2016. \nhttps://www.samanthafarrell.com/

Cathartic songs delivered with haunting vocals\, swelling drums\, and atmospheric guitars straddle somewhere between ‘90s indie rock and woozy shoegaze. \n\n\nIcarus Phoenix is an indie-rock band from Baltimore\, MD led by Drew Danburry (gtr/vox) with Eli Sims (drums)\, Leena Rhodes (gtr/vox/synth) and Brendan Russell (bass). Having built a cult following after being included on Stereogum’s albums of note for their “Son” EP as well as their DIY tour to Japan/USA in 2024 they are preparing to release their fourth studio album in August 2024. Recording it in Provo\, Utah at June Audio (Nov 2022) with producer Jed Jones (Post Malone\, The Killers) and recruiting the help of longtime friends Jake Bellows (Neva Dinova)\, Justin Pacheco\, Andrew Young (Gingers Palace) to help track 40 songs in 3 days. Written by Drew Danburry in 2021-2022 after divorcing his wife of 13 years and leaving his 8 year old son with her to move across the country amidst a housing crisis. \n\n\nEmerging from the New England post-grunge\, alternative rock scene in 1997\, The Sheila Divine captivated audiences with a raw intensity reminiscent of teenage heartbreak. The band\, initially formed by Aaron Perrino (guitar\, vocals)\, Shawn Sears (drums)\, and Jim Gilbert (bass)\, quickly made their mark with their powerful sound and emotive performances. Aaron Perrino\, the heart and soul of The Sheila Divine\, has been writing songs since he was 16. His journey through various bands such as Dear Leader\, No Hope No Harm\, and Aaron & the Lord has been marked by relentless creativity and a steadfast commitment to his art. No matter the challenges\, music has remained his true north\, guiding him through life’s tumultuous moments. Perrino’s signature style\, often described as “whisper to a scream\,” showcases his ability to balance delicate melodies with intense\, almost primal outbursts. His voice\, filled with both vulnerability and ferocity\, has become a defining element of The Sheila Divine’s sound. The band’s origins trace back to the University of New York at Oneonta\, where Perrino and his original bandmates formed The Waverlys. Their reconnection in Boston’s music scene led to the birth of The Sheila Divine. The band quickly garnered attention\, signing with Cherry Disc Records and releasing an EP in 1998. By 1999\, they were signed by Roadrunner Records\, releasing their debut album\, New Parade. Over the years\, The Sheila Divine has seen various lineup changes but has always remained centered around Perrino’s artistic vision. Subsequent releases\, including Where Have My Countrymen Gone (2001)\, Secret Society EP (2002)\, The Things That Once Were (2012)\, The Morbs (2015)\, and The Beginning of the End Is Where We’ll Start Again (2019)\, continued to push the boundaries of their sound while staying true to their roots. Perrino envisions the future of The Sheila Divine as a dynamic\, collaborative project akin to Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds\, with different eras and lineups continually pushing the band to new heights. Excitement buzzes around the upcoming release of The Sheila Divine’s new concept album\, I Am the Darkness. We Are the Light.\, set to drop on Halloween 2024. The album promises to be a profound exploration of contrasts\, reflecting the band’s journey through light and darkness. The first single\, “I Know There Is Happiness\,” is already out\, with the second single\, “Satan Got My Soul\,” premiering on August 21st. Aaron Perrino’s unwavering passion and dedication to his craft ensure that The Sheila Divine’s legacy will continue to grow\, inspiring new generations of listeners.

Or rather\, it had plenty of them before the band took sledgehammers and scalpels to most of the pretty bits. \n“It took a while to get the bones of some of the tunes down just so we could break them\,” bandleader James Rohr told Herald with a laugh. \nLocal champs the Blue Ribbons are a pop band in the same way that the Beatles or Steely Dan or Television are pop bands in that they like pop but “aren’t too precious about the songs\,” Rohr said. \nJed Gottleib – Boston Herald

Whether on the stage of a metropolitan concert hall or the makeshift bandstand of a neighborhood dive\, you will find him exploring uncharted musical territories\, listening for new ways to stir his influences into this night’s expression of his unique sound – strangely familiar\, naturally mysterious\, unmistakably his own. \nHaggins\, a Massachusetts native\, cut his teeth playing locally and a chance encounter at an open mic led to an introduction that would seal his fate. Bruce Marshall\, a local music legend formally of the Toy Caldwell Band\, was so impressed with Haggins’ that he took the young musician under his wing\, introducing him to a local promoter who in turn booked Haggins at higher profile venues. \nhttps://verdictmusic.com/artists/dwayne-haggins/#:~:text=He’s%20been%20described%20as%20%E2%80%9Cthe\,his%20voice%20is%20his%20own.

SUMMARY:The Macrotones/Zamova
DESCRIPTION:The Macrotones return to the Lizard Lounge with guests Zamova!\n\n\nEvent is 21+$15/20 door \nEstablished in Boston in 2007\, The Macrotones are a 10-piece unit steeped in off-beat funk & soul rhythms from all over the globe. Blazing horns meet mighty hooks for a progressive mix fit to fill any dancefloor. \nThe band’s tightly-honed grooves and infectious sound has shared the stage with like-minded practitioners such as Lee Fields & the Expressions\, Durand Jones & the Indications\, the Budos Band\, Grupo Fantasma\, Orgone\, Ikebe Shakedown\, and Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars. Since typical genre descriptions fail to fully capture the scope of the Macrotones sound\, new monikers need exploration: imperial funk\, astrobeat\, or even “a soundtrack for spies” all fit. \nAfter numerous instrumental LP’s and EP’s released on Music ADD\, a new era for the band began in 2019 when friend and occasional guest vocalist Phil Desisto joined full time. Phil’s commanding and gritty vocals\, a bit like Bobby Womack meets Mike Patton\, saw the band embrace more classic soul sounds from the ‘6os and ’70s\, while retaining their edgy funk. \nJune 2024 finally saw the release of ‘From The Void’\, their new LP with Phil on all 10 tracks. A feature on WBUR’s album guide remarked that “the LP showcases soulful lead vocals along with the psychedelic grooves the Macrotones have mastered.” This fall\, they will follow up with an instrumental version of the album featuring two new instrumental songs not featured on the original record\, and celebrate with a release party at the Lizard Lounge. \n\n\nBased out of various areas of New England\, Zamova is a jazz-fusion group that was formed in 2019 when Grammy award winning producer\, Motif Alumni & his company The Rucker Collective joined forces with the owners behind one of Boston’s most prominent record stores\, Music Research Library. With influences shaped by years of record digging\, this group represents a collage of Bruton/KPM libraries\, DIY bedroom-private press\, & 1970’s prog rock\, sprinkled with a dash of George Duke. “Expositions” is their latest release available on Madlib’s Invazion label
