SUMMARY:Say Zuzu/Matt Hebert and Haunt
DESCRIPTION:Say Zuzu live at the Lizard Lounge August 7th with Matt Hebert and the Haunt at 8 oclock!\n\n\n$20/$25 Door \nDoors 7 \nWhen we take advantage of the moment\, we live life to the fullest. Reverent of the past and excited for the future\, Say ZuZu makes the most of the present in their music. The New Hampshire six-piece—Cliff Murphy\, brothers Jon and James Nolan\, Steve Ruhm\, Tim Nylander\, and Jon Pistey—artfully thread together a reflective patchwork of folk\, rock\, alternative\, and country powered by lifelong friendships and a collective ambition to “carpe diem.” As such\, they sound as alive as ever on their seventh full-length offering and first original LP in 21 years\, the aptly titled No Time To Lose . \n“There’s too much to do\, and there’s no time to lose\,” observes Cliff. “Between music\, work\, parenting\, and whatever the rest of your day entails\, we’re in the rush hour of life right now. This was an incredible opportunity to make new music and be present again. We’re in a universe of people who have the rare privilege of making records and sharing them with the world. We don’t have the luxury of sitting on our hands. We’re in constant motion.” \n“In this phase of Say ZuZu\, we have an opportunity to step in the same river twice\,” adds Jon. “I’m in the current river with the wisdom of a late forty-something dude. I’m not going to tell you I’m fifty\, because I’m not. I’m hanging on brother\,” he laughs. \nThey dove headfirst into the river back in 1992. Jon\, James\, and Cliff bonded over the likes of Uncle Tupelo and Neil Young\, founding Say ZuZu and crafting a signature sound equally steeped in eloquent folk and gritty homegrown rock ‘n’ roll. They went on to build a cult audience by way of a series of fan favorite albums\, including Say ZuZu \, Highway Signs & Driving Songs \, Take These Turns \, Bull \, Live \, and Every Mile . Along the way\, they crisscrossed the country countless times in a converted school bus affectionately dubbed “The Bull\,” found success in Europe\, and lived through enough to inspire a lifetime of unforgettable memories. The group amicably split up during 2003. Over the next 16 years\, the guys started families (Jon has three kids and Cliff has four kids) and embarked on all manner of adventures. Cliff achieved a PhD in Ethnomusicology from Brown University\, Steve completed flight school\, Jon Pistey moved the family to Utah to run an Olympic ice rink\, Tim continued to tour. Jon opened up MIlltown Recording Company where he recorded and produced other artists for ten years\, while releasing two solo records of his own\, including When the Summers Lasted Long. Musical collaborations also happened intermittently. Jon mixed Cliff’s solo record Bay State Lullaby\, while Tim supplied drums as well. \n2019 saw the group perform a series of emotionally charged reunion shows to sold out audiences\, sowing the seeds for the future. \n“Suddenly\, we were in rooms full of people singing songs in a way they never had\,” smiles Jon. “Those experiences were really important.” \nDuring the COVID-19 Global Pandemic\, New West Records owner George Fontaine\, Sr. reached out to Jon and Cliff. As the story goes\, he nearly signed the band at the turn-of-the-century\, so you could call it “unfinished business.” Inking a deal with Fontaine’s Strolling Bones\, Say ZuZu commemorated its halcyon years with Here Again: A Retrospective (1994-2002) before recording No Time To Lose over the course of just ten days in December 2021. They channeled their original chemistry with the benefit of two decades of wisdom. \n“I began writing songs in a way and at a pace I hadn’t since my twenties\,” admits Cliff. “Being able to re-engage with Jon as a creative foil\, partner\, and co-editor was awesome.” \n \nSay Zuzu \n\n\nWorld-weary\, whiskey-soaked\, unbearably gorgeous and timeless. These are a few things that have been said about Matt Hebert and his numerous projects over the span of his career. Beginning with his Alt-Country act\, Ware River Club and later with the revolving outfit of Haunt\, Matt Hebert has released seven full-length albums\, including two under his own name. Hebert has shared the stage with many of his heroes\, including Emmylou Harris\, Bob Mould\, The Jayhawks\, Dave Alvin\, Ellis Paul\, Daniel Johnston\, Richard Buckner\, Freedy Johnston\, Tift Merritt\, and Anders Parker\, to name a few. Hebert’s songs have crossed over in other mediums\, with multiple placements including Drafthouse Films’ “Cheap Thrills” and the TV show “How I Met Your Mother”. Hebert wrote the musical score for “I’m Not Les: A Transgender Story”\, a PBS documentary released in 2012 by Daniel Kopec.Matt Hebert’s third solo release\, “Where The Heart Beats Slow” takes root from his move to Santa Fe in 2016. Relocating to an art-filled town filled with adobe homes on tiny\, crooked streets and awe-inspiring sunsets nestled in between mountains offered a chance to relax\, reset and rebuild life’s path; the seven songs on “Where the Heart Beats Slow” are the result. The title track sings “Honey come up to the peak and lay your heart in front of me/ Let’s go\, where the heart beats slow”\, illustrating a renewed outlook on relationships. The album is evocative of light and breezy summer days accompanied by cool\, desert nights. The introspective and emotional challenging lyrics lend to an unassuming dichotomy to the record’s 70’s AM radio influenced sound\, peppered with Moogs and angular guitars.Hebert brought longtime producer and collaborator\, Danny Bernini to record vocals and acoustic guitar in Hebert’s home studio in Santa Fe. Bernini followed up in Western Massachusetts\, overdubbing at Spirithouse Studios with an inspired group of creative players. Caleb and Jacob Rozazzo (Lux Deluxe) on Guitar and Bass\, Paul McNamara on Synths\, Miranda Brown (The New Pornographers) on Harmonies\, and Bernini\, himself\, on Drums.Back in Austin\, TX since September\, Hebert has formed an incredible line-up consisting of David Goodrich (Chris Smither\, Peter Mulvey\, Jeffery Foucault\, William Harries Graham) on Lead Guitar\, Seth Sherman (Tinnerose\, Seth Sherman) on Guitar/Vocals\, Joel Calvin on Drums and Greg Barclay on Bass/ Vocals (Oh No Oh My and Texas Never Whispers). The band has been playing local shows in Austin\, including successful shows for SXSW this past March and are preparing for regional\, Western Mass\, and Northeast release shows this upcoming mid-summer.\n\nMatt Hebert

Despite this change the group continues to incorporate some of the top musicians in the Boston and New York reggae\, Ska and Jazz scenes\, on it’s recordings and live shows. \nJamaican percussion legend LARRY McDONALD (Bob Marley\, Taj Mahal\, Gil Scot Heron\, Lee Perry)\, guitarist ANDY BASSFORD (Toots & The Maytals\, Monty Alexander\, Burning Spear)\, Trombonist BUFORD O’SULLIVAN (easy Star Allstars\, Scofflaws) and Pianist Key Stewart (Skatallites\, Soulshot) are a few of the musicians who you might see playing with the group on a given night\, as well as the most recent iteration of the core line up: Bassist THADDEUS MERRITT (Westbound Train\, the Toasters)\, Drummer JESSE HAYES (Void Union\, the Toasters)\, Saxophonist JC SKA COHEN (Westbound Train\, Void Union) and Jazz Guitar extraordinaire CHRIS BROWN (Chris Brown quartet\, Metallica). \nThe group has released three full-length studio albums\, Good Evil Alchemy\, The Move\, and Love Bombs (Jump-Up Records)\, as well as one live album\, Live In NYC (Rarebreed Records)\, and are currently working on their fourth studio album. \n \nThe Attractors \n \n \n\n\nJuliet Hawkins\, a captivating vocalist and songwriter\, raised on the east coast and residing now in Peru\, Vermont\, has spent more than a decade honing her craft—intertwining her personal journey of pain\, pleasure\, and radical self-acceptance into her original music all across the United States. With a rich\, genre-bending style that encompasses RnB\, country\, swing\, and soul\, Juliet’s music resonates with a poetic and provocative allure\, encouraging listeners to embrace freedom of thought. Her voice\, as iconic as it is beautiful\, promises to never conform. After she cut her teeth in the world of songwriting and producing in Nashville\, TN for three years—playing some of Music Citys’ finest stages both solo and full band\, she felt called to the west coast for a more open minded\, culturally rich landscape. It was there that she put together another band\, co-produced multiple music videos\, NPR tiny desk submissions\, and wrote and released her dream live album\, “Stay True”\, co-producing with Grammy winning engineer\, Bob Tucker (Tupac\, The Temptations). She is known for captivating audiences with raw\, authentic live energy. Juliet’s repertoire includes reimagined classics like Ozzy Osbourne’s “Crazy Train” and The Righteous Brothers’ “Unchained Melody”\, where her unique tone and approach breathe new life into familiar classics. Stay updated on Juliet’s latest creations and concerts by subscribing to her mailing list\, and don’t miss the opportunity to experience her remarkable talent firsthand. \n \nJuliet Hawkins

SUMMARY:dayes/Brendan Cleary/Russell Jamie Johnson
DESCRIPTION:dayes\, Brendan Cleary and Russell Jamie Johnson live at the Lizard Lounge August 20th!\n\n\ndayes is an independent alternative folk band based in Boston\, MA\, led by songwriter and vocalist Patrick Morelli. Morelli blends his love for the free-spirited energy of modern jam bands like Dispatch and Mt. Joy\, along with the intimate storytelling of folk artists such as Caamp and The Lumineers. Morelli is joined by his wife\, Camille Morelli\, on bass\, and longtime friend Pete Duffy on lead guitar. When not working on music\, Patrick and Camille are high school teachers at a small\, private school in Boston. \ndayes has performed extensively throughout New England\, including notable venues such as The Middle East and the Midway Cafe. They have continued to expand their reach nationally by performing shows in New York City\, Nashville\, Washington D.C.\, Jacksonville\, and San Diego. Their music has received airplay on numerous college and independent radio stations including Martha’s Vineyard\, MVY station\, and WDVX’s Blue Plate Special in Knoxville\, TN where they performed live. Additionally\, dayes has become one of the newest artists for Sofar Sounds and has performed shows at their Boston\, Portland\, and Worcester locations. \nIn fall 2025\, dayes released their debut full-length album\, Up on the Rooftops. Designed to offer comfort and reflection\, the record moves seamlessly between alternative rock anthems\, introspective singer-songwriter tracks\, and intimate political lullabies. This is just the beginning for dayes and they are excited for what is next! \ndayes \n\n\n“I’ve always had a soft spot for really talented youngsters\, and Brendan is one of the most talented I’ve ever encountered.” — Tom Rush\, Folk Legend \nIn 2019\, Brendan Cleary hit the bottom — and his life restarted. After years of struggling with addiction while fighting to maintain a career as a live musician in Nashville\, the world finally came crashing down around him. It was the beginning of the road back to finding his voice again. \nPlaying hotel bars and restaurants\, Brendan slowly felt his way back to the songwriter he had always been in his heart of hearts\, using his struggles to connect with an understanding audience. \nHis hard work paid off. In 2024\, Brendan was named a finalist in the New Hampshire Music Collective Songwriting Competition and invited to tour with legend Tom Rush across the United States. Brendan has also appeared on NHPR’s The Folk Show with Kate McNally\, and on WSCA’s The Button Factory Soundcheck. \nIn 2026\, Brendan Cleary is preparing to release his debut studio record\, Soundbox\, a folk-roots collection of songs that trace the long road through addiction\, recovery\, redemption\, and of course\, love. Produced by Carter Sanders\, the record gathers together years of hard-won writing — songs shaped on barroom stages\, open mics\, and late-night notebook pages. Soundbox offers an intimate portrait of a songwriter rediscovering his voice and carrying those stories forward to audiences who recognize pieces of their own lives in the music. \nBrendan Cleary \n\n\nRussell Jamie Johnson is a New York City–based singer-songwriter and actor crafting cinematic indie-folk songs that feel both timeless and intensely personal. Blending the emotional honesty of folk storytelling with sweeping Americana textures and alternative influences\, Johnson’s music lives in the aftermath of love\, memory\, and longing. His voice moves effortlessly between intimate vulnerability and raw intensity\, carried by fingerpicked guitars\, atmospheric arrangements\, and lyrics that read like scenes from a film. \nOriginally from Linton\, Indiana\, Johnson discovered music at a young age before eventually studying songwriting at Berklee College of Music. After relocating to New York\, he continued developing his sound while expanding into acting\, bringing a deeply visual and emotional sensibility into his songwriting and live performances. \nOnstage\, Johnson creates an experience that feels immersive and deeply human—moving from quiet\, confessional moments to soaring emotional releases that pull audiences directly into the world of each song. His performances are marked by an authenticity that makes even the largest room feel personal. \nHis upcoming self-titled album\, Russell Jamie Johnson\, is his most fully realized work to date: a heartbreak-driven collection of songs exploring love\, loss\, nostalgia\, and the versions of ourselves we leave behind. \nRussell Jamie Johnson

SUMMARY:JJ Slater/Savoir Faire/Safe Journey
DESCRIPTION:JJ Slater\, Savoir Faire and Safe Journey live at the Lizard Lounge August 27th!\n\n\n$15 adv/$20 doors \nDoors 7 \nUsually when folks describe JJ Slater’s music\, words relate back to nature\, the outdoors\, the warm sun and the cool breeze. His UMASS Amherst psych-rock band Humble Digs was a mainstay at Stockbridge School of Agriculture events\, and ten years later tours are often routed with ulterior\, National Park-related motives. \nBased in New England\, he has toured much of the US\, playing festivals\, basements\, and club gigs\, at times opening for artists like Kat Wright\, NRBQ\, Johnny A\, and David Wax Museum. In 2022\, he completed a residency at the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation\, where he wrote his new record “The Silver Key”. It was recorded with a Mass Cultural Council grant in 2023\, released at the end of 2024\, and you’ll find him touring and playing the full record in 2025. He’ll also be touring with his Americana-Blues road-dog project Signature Dish\, co-fronting the band with partner Lexi Weege and lending his songs to a dynamic\, soul-journey set. \nhttps://www.jjslatermusic.com/ \n\n\nWith a voice straight out of the jazz age\, Savoir Faire brings the modern existential crisis into a realm of retro-noir. Born to an American mother and an Iranian father\, Savoir Faire was absorbing the influences of everything from classic 60s rock to Persian pop at an early age. It was during her pre-teen years that she was inspired by the 90s wave of female songwriters to pick up the guitar. Eventually\, she studied jazz guitar in college\, where she would discover the duets of Joe Passand Ella Fitzgerald. The artistry of both musicians would greatly influence Savoir Faire’s approach to both guitar and voice. She would spend years performing as a lounge singer and jazz guitarist before adding the last few ingredients that would form the aesthetic of Savoir Faire: lush and syrupy vocals\, biting lyricism\, and searing guitar parts that float between the genres of jazz\, rock\, and chamber pop. The result is a Lynchian rumination on the present in the debut album Hopeless Nostalgic\, combining wistful nostalgia and modern rage to answer the question “What if a torch singer had a Riot Grrl heart?” \nSavoir Faire \n\n\nSafe Journey is an indie project led by photographer-turned-songwriter Steph Larsen\, who began writing after unexpectedly losing her mother in 2022 just after her 30th birthday. With no formal musical training\, Steph turned her grief into songs. She reunited with guitarist Liz Glenn\, drummer Emily Payson and bassist Michaela Knight\, old friends from the South Shore of MA\, transforming what started as a solo exploration into a kismet she/they band. Named from a friendship bracelet on the eve of their first recording day\, Safe Journey crafts raw\, heartfelt singer-songwriter indie rock with a touch of twang that explores grief and the human experience and reminds listeners that they’re not alone. \nSafe Journey

SUMMARY:The Blue Ribbons/PlusOrMinus
DESCRIPTION:The Blue Ribbons return to the Lizard Lounge with PlusOrMinus Aug 29th.\n\n\n$15/$20 \nDoors 7 \n \n“The Blue Ribbons’ latest album\, 2024’s “Forever\, But Not For Long\,” has plenty of pop hooks. Or rather\, it had plenty of them before the band took sledgehammers and scalpels to most of the pretty bits. \n“It took a while to get the bones of some of the tunes down just so we could break them\,” bandleader James Rohr told Herald with a laugh. \nLocal champs the Blue Ribbons are a pop band in the same way that the Beatles or Steely Dan or Television are pop bands in that they like pop but “aren’t too precious about the songs\,” Rohr said. \nJed Gottleib – Boston Herald \n \nThe Blue Ribbons

SUMMARY:Ask Carol
DESCRIPTION:Join us Sept 12th for Norwegian Indie rockers Ask Carol live at the Lizard Lounge!\n\n\n$20/$25 door \nDoors 7 \nAsk Carol is an alternative indie-rock duo that has emerged from the remote Norwegian mountain community of Auma\, ready to shake up the music scene. Don’t let the small size of this band fool you – with two guitars\, drums\, synth\, Carol’s unique bass and guitar system\, and a bit of multitasking\, Ask Carol packs a punch with a sound as big as a full band. The music of this high-energy power-duo ranges from fierce and mean to soft and comforting\, drawing inspiration from the likes of the Kills\, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs\, and the White Stripes\, all with a distinct Nordic\, melancholic twist. \nAsk Carol has already made a name for themselves on the international stage\, touring in the USA\, UK\, Germany\, Italy\, Philippines\, Japan\, South Korea\, and Scandinavia\, and performing at SXSW several times (2024\, 2023\, 2018). They’ve also had the privilege of supporting The Brian Jonestown Massacre on tour. In August 2022\, they released their highly-anticipated debut album through their own indie label\, ChoVan Records\, to widespread acclaim from the press\, including a 5/6 rating in Dagbladet\, one of Norway’s largest newspapers. Their sophomore album\, AC II: Desert Sky\, followed\, with an exclusive Vinyl release in February 2026. \nWhen the pandemic hit and live shows were put on hold\, Ask Carol took the opportunity to regroup and reinvent themselves. They used the downtime to create self-produced music videos\, merch and live recordings\, and emerge from the pandemic with their debut album in hand\, ready to take on the world. The three years since the world opened up they have toured non-stop. Despite being isolated in their mountain town\, with only a few neighbors and a herd of cows as an audience\, Ask Carol used their solitude to craft a dark\, introspective atmosphere that permeates their music and is sure to captivate listeners. Don’t miss the chance to experience the unique and powerful sound of Ask Carol live in 2026. \nAsk Carol

SUMMARY:Ali McGuirk
DESCRIPTION:Soulful influenced singer songwriter Ali McGuirk returns to the Lizard Lounge Sept 25th!\n\n\n$20 adv/$25 door \n \nBlending classic soul power with a folk songwriter lyricism\, New England’s Ali McGuirk has the rare ability to silence a room with just a few words of a song. With a voice that is raw and sultry and a style rooted in improvisation\, her sets are a hypnotic and intimate journey. \nOn her Signature Sounds Recordings debut ’Til It’s Gone\, McGuirk delivers a sublime set of songs that pairs her trademark soul sound with rootsy turns and raw rock ‘n’ roll detours. The album landed on the Boston Globe’s Top 50 Albums list for 2022. Consequence of Sound raved\, “‘All Back’ feels like it could exist somewhere outside of space and time– it could be on a record in the background of a party in a 1970s bungalow\, or it could be on your Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify. Either way\, it’s a great listen.” \nMcGuirk co-produced ‘Til It’s Gone with Jonah Tolchin (a star singer-songwriter in his own right) and a set of session legends: Little Feat guitarist/mandolinist Fred Tackett\, organist Larry Goldings (James Taylor\, Norah Jones)\, singer Valerie Pinkston (Ray Charles\, Luther Vandross)\, percussionist Lenny Castro (Stevie Nicks\, Stevie Wonder). They provided the astounding chops\, but the true magic of the album comes from McGuirk’s singular voice as both singer and songwriter. The nine tracks run from intimate introspection to wider meditations on oppression and justice\, from tough r&b and tender soul to big rock guitar and twangy folk. And McGuirk’s voice – bold\, buttery\, spellbinding – carries each song to the next til they’re gone. \nAli McGuirk

SUMMARY:Otis Grove
DESCRIPTION:Otis Grove bring the Runk back to Lizard Lounge Sept 26th.\n\n\n$20 adv/$25 door \nDoors at 8 \nThere’s a new sound taking over the town known as Boston. If you’re by the banks of the Charles River as the moon glows over the muddy waters you very well may hear some thick\, groovy beats banging out a trail for raw guitar licks and a soul-drenched Hammond organ. Yes indeed\, ladies and gentleman who are down with the funk\, it’s time to get rocked by your new favorite band: Otis Grove. \n \nOtis Grove began as a collective experiment in crossing the traditional organ jazz sound with funk\, hip-hop\, and rock tones. It was the beginning of a sonic realization based in groove and free in improvisation\, yet rooted in songwriting and melodic structure. In early 2004\, on the heels of their self-titled debut album\, the band began spreading their sound to clubs around the New England area. The music\, which has since evolved into a unique blend of aggressive rock n’ roll and high-intensity organ funk (some fans have dubbed their genre ‘Runk’- a mixture of rock and funk)\, pays tribute to the masters while consistently pushing itself in new directions. Performer Magazine writer Sam Merrick described it as “a monstrous funk groove that probably would have sent Godzilla running had he been in the neighborhood.” \n \nWhile an organ-based power trio at it’s core\, Otis Grove likes to keep it spicy by frequently collaborating with other musicians. Special guests who have joined the band for performances and recordings include Oteil Burbridge\, Mr. Lif\, Melvin Sparks\, Akrobatik\, Ryan Montbleau\, Jesse Dee\, The Akashic Horns\, Garrett Sayers\, Tim Palmieri\, Amy Bellamy\, Aaron Bellamy\, Bill Carbone\, Beau Sasser\, Johnny Trama\, Danny Mayer…… and many many more. \nOtis Grove \n\n\nLizard Lounge Is 21+
